Using the Custom Assessment Builder

Build custom assessments that are applicable and appropriate to each position. Easily add them in to your testing workflow.

Updated over a week ago

To open the assessment builder:

  1. Log into the Hire Success web app and click "Account" in the top right-hand corner.

  2. Choose "Access the Custom Assessment Builder" from the "Administrators" list.

From here, you can view all the pre-built assessments that come with your Hire Success account and toggle their campaign availability on or off.

Click the "My Assessments" tab to view all of the assessments you've built for your organization and toggle their campaign availability on or off. You can also edit any custom assessment as long as no applicants have taken it yet. (If any applicants have already taken the assessment, you can clone it and edit the new version.)

To create a new assessment, click the green "+ Create an assessment" button in the upper right-hand corner.

General Information

Fill these fields out to name your assessment and provide any authorship and copyright information you may need to note.

  • Title: Required field for the name of your assessment. (Ex: "Grammar Assessment," "Accounting Skills Assessment.")

  • Author info: Optional field for the name of your assessment's author. (Most organizations leave this blank.)

  • Copyright info: Optional field where you can add any copyright information that applies to your assessment. (Most organizations leave this blank.)

Assessment Options

  • Set a time limit for this assessment? Adds a timer that the applicant will see count down as they take the assessment. Once time is up, the assessment automatically submits. Click the checkbox to bring up a box where you can enter the time limit in minutes. (Learn more.)

  • Cheating Mitigation: Plays a noise and warns applicants not to leave the assessment window if they click away. If the individual stays away for longer than a couple of seconds, the assessment will automatically submit. The assessment results will show you timestamps for every time the applicant left the assessment window; if an applicant clicked away frequently, even if it wasn't long enough for them to search for question answers, you can ask about that if they move forward. (Learn more.)

  • Randomize Question Order: Questions appear in a different, random order every time. (Learn more.)

  • Show one question at a time: Helps prevent applicants from taking a screenshot of the assessment and asking to re-take it after they've researched the questions, especially when paired with Randomize Question Order. (Learn more.)

  • Add custom categories to this assessment?: Allows you to assign categories to various questions (ex: "Grade 6–8 Math," "Grade 9–12 Math," and "College-Level Math.") Click the checkbox to bring up fields for entering your custom categories. (Learn more.)

Instructions

You can review the automatically included instructions that will appear to applicants here, or check the "Use Custom Instructions" box to edit the text.

Description

Optionally, you can add an additional description that will appear to applicants at the start of the assessment beneath instructions. (Most organizations leave this blank.)

Once you've filled out all of the above fields, click the green "Create this assessment" button. This saves your assessment and brings you to the next screen, where you'll add questions.

Adding Questions

Scroll past the assessment stats and instructions at the top, and you'll find options to add curated or custom questions.

Explore curated questions

Click this button to add questions that have been pre-loaded by Hire Success, or questions that you've previously created for assessments. You can search questions, browse by category, or just scroll through all the questions. Click the button beneath each question to add it to the assessment; it will automatically be added so that you can continue choosing questions without reloading the page.

Add your own question

Click this button to add your own custom questions to the assessment. You'll see several options for building your question:

  • Question Type: Multiple choice allows you to add options that the applicant can choose from. Typed response will prompt the applicant to manually type in their response.

  • Points: Choose how many points this question should be worth. If all questions should be weighted evenly, you can just leave everything at 1. (Learn more about points.)

  • Category: This field will only appear if you selected "Add custom categories to this assessment?" in the assessment options. Enter the category the question should be assigned to.

  • Question Text: Enter the question as you'd like it to appear to applicants. Click the cloud with an up arrow to upload images, audio files, video clips, or any other multimedia that you need to include as part of the question. (For example, a recording of a word that applicants must spell.)

  • Answers: For a multiple choice question, add all the answers that applicants can choose from, along with what percentage of the points they should receive for selecting that answer. For example, if there's one right answer and the others are wrong, you'll likely choose 100% for the right answer and 0% for the wrong ones. But if there's an answer that is partially correct and you'd like to give partial credit, you could assign it 50% or some other percentage of the points. (Learn more about percentages.) In this example, the individual will see options to choose either "moot" or "mute." "Moot" is correct and gets full credit. "Mute" is not and gets no points. You can drag and drop these answers, add more answers, or delete answers you've decided not to include. Blank answers will automatically delete when you save the assessment. For a typed response question, add all the correct answers (or answers that should receive any points) that an applicant might enter, as well as what percentage of the total points each answer is worth. For example, you may want to give full or partial credit to common misspellings. (Learn more about percentages.) In this example, the individual will have a blank field to enter an answer. If they enter either "9" or "nine," they will get full credit. Any other answer will receive no credit.Capitalization does not matter for typed response questions, so you do not need to enter different styles of capitalization. Order also does not matter; these will not appear to the applicant and are only used to score the question. You can add as many answers as you'd like. (Learn more about how to use typed response questions.) After you've added all the answers you need, hit "Add this question" to add it to your assessment. It will also now be accessible from the "Explore curated questions" menu for other assessments.

Activate or Deactivate Assessment

Once you've saved your questions, you need to activate the assessment before your team can add it to campaigns. Click "Publish changes" in the orange alert box to publish and activate your assessment.

Click the red "Deactivate this assessment" button at the top of the question page to deactivate the assessment and remove it as an option when building campaigns.

You can also go to the "My Assessments" page and toggle the "Available to campaigns" option on or off to activate or deactivate the assessment.

Edit Assessment

You can edit a custom assessment at any point until a candidate takes the assessment. (At that point, you will have to clone the assessment and make edits to the clone. When you view the assessment, there will be an option to clone it.)

To edit a custom assessment:

  1. Log into the Hire Success web app and click "Account" in the top right-hand corner.

  2. Choose "Access the Custom Assessment Builder" from "Administrators" list.

  3. Choose the "My Assessments" tab to view all of your custom assessments.

  4. If an assessment is available for editing, you'll see an "Edit details" button next to "Manage questions." Click "Edit details."

  5. This will bring up the custom assessment builder you used to create the assessment. You can edit any settings or questions; see above for more details.
